Eczema, Psoriasis, Rosacea? This Is What You Need...

I think one of the biggest mistakes we make with our skin is believing that everything has to come from the outside. If you have a problem with your skin then you need a cream to put on it.

We spend so much time and money focusing on what we can apply to the skin, layering products, trying to fix what we can see in the mirror, but we don’t always stop to think about what’s actually going on underneath. The reality is that your skin isn’t separate from the rest of your body. It’s a giant organ of the body that is generally showing you what is going on within. So if your body is inflamed, depleted or lacking in key nutrients, your skin will show you that, no matter how good your skincare routine is.

Over the years, I've learnt many things about skin health, but one thing in particular is that if a client is struggling with a skin concern over and over again and no topical product makes a huge difference, it's generally coming from the inside.

This could be a food intolerance, hormonal issue or something autoimmune such as psoriasis. For more autoimmune conditions such as psoriasis and even rosacea (although it's not an autoimmune condition, it can be an autoimmune 'response'), a supplement can actually really help.

Now let's be honest, the supplement industry is a bit of a minefield. Everyone is hawking something, promising everything, and a lot of it either overlaps, under-delivers or doesn’t really have much thought behind how it works in the body. So I’m quite particular about what I recommend. It has to really make sense, both clinically and from what I see in skin every day. I also need studies when it comes to supplements to prove the science and claims made because otherwise just because your favourite influencer says it works... they could just be saying that!

Skinade Derma Defense is one of those products that does make sense, because it focuses on two vitamins that are absolutely essential for skin health, vitamin A and vitamin D.

Vitamin A is one we talk about a lot in skincare, usually in the form of retinols and retinoids. We know it helps with cell turnover, improves texture, supports collagen production and can soften the appearance of fine lines over time. The problem is that when it’s used topically, it often comes with irritation, dryness and inflammation, which isn’t ideal for a lot of people, especially if your skin is already compromised or sensitive (please see last week's blog post here where I talk all about that)

When you take vitamin A internally, you’re working with the body rather than constantly challenging the skin by causing inflammation. It's supporting healthy cell turnover, helping the skin renew itself properly and improving dryness and texture, but without this stop-start cycle that so many people experience when they try to use stronger topical vitamin A products. It’s a much better way of getting results, particularly if your skin doesn’t tolerate retinoids well.

What I also see in clinic is that when you start taking oral vitamin A it tends to tolerate topical actives much better. So rather than forcing your skin to accept certain products, you’re actually helping your skin handle them more easily, which ultimately leads to better results.

Vitamin D is the other piece of the puzzle that often gets overlooked, but it plays a huge role in how the skin behaves. It’s heavily involved in immune function and inflammation, and if levels are low, it can affect how the skin heals and how reactive it becomes. This is particularly relevant when you’re dealing with conditions like rosacea, eczema or psoriasis, where inflammation is a key driver in them.

Now, I’m not saying a supplement is going to “fix” those conditions, because it doesn’t work like that. But when the body can regulate inflammation better, you often find the skin becomes calmer, less reactive and easier to manage.

Then when you combine Skinade Derma Defense with Skinade Original the magic happens. Skinade Original is focused on collagen, stimulating the fibroblasts to produce more of it and protecting what you already have. Derma Defense supports the environment that collagen sits in. So rather than only focusing on building collagen, you’re also supporting the skin cells, the barrier function, the immune response and the inflammatory pathways that influence how your skin actually behaves.

You’re essentially working on the structure and the environment at the same time, and that’s when you might notice not just how the skin looks, but in how it feels and responds to topical products.

There are certain clients where I almost always suggest this combination. If the skin is dry, reactive or struggling to heal properly, if the barrier feels compromised, if hormones are having an impact on the skin, or if someone is dealing with inflammatory skin conditions and we need to support things gently. It’s also something I consider when clients are having more advanced treatments, where topical retinoids might not be appropriate but we still want to support the skin’s renewal process. For example if you're having laser treatments, topical vitamin A is contraindicated but oral vitamin A isn't.

I think what people don't always understand is that you can have the best skincare routine in the world, but if the internal side isn’t supported, it just won't show the results that you want.

My approach has always been about supporting the skin properly and building it's strength, reducing unnecessary inflammation which therefore is allowing it to function correctly. Skinade Original and Derma Defense work together so well to give that complete package of skin health.

If you’re struggling with your skin, whether that’s sensitivity, dryness, inflammation or simply feeling like it’s not behaving the way it used to, it might be time to look at what’s going on internally as well.

If you’d like help with that, you can book an online consultation with me here and we can look at your skin properly and create a plan that works for you.

Thank you so much for reading,
