Why You’re Still Getting Pigmentation (Even Though You Wear SPF)

Let’s talk about one of the most frustrating skincare mysteries: why are you still getting pigmentation when you swear you wear SPF every single day?

First of all, I'm as you can imagine, very thrilled you're making SPF a daily habit. That already puts you ahead of most. But if new patches are still appearing, or your old pigmentation refuses to budge, here’s the truth: wearing SPF is essential, but it’s not the only thing you need to be doing.
Here’s what could be going on…

1. You’re Not Reapplying
This is probably the most common reason. SPF isn’t a one-and-done product. It needs topping up every 2–3 hours, especially if you’re outdoors, sweating, or anywhere near a window. Yes, even that lunchtime dog walk or quick drive to Pilates counts.
Makeup on? I get it, slathering on more sunscreen over a full face sounds like a mess. But thankfully, we’ve got SkinBetter Science and Revision options now
SkinBetter Science ToneSmart SPF 50 Compact – mineral, tone-adapting, and easy to dab on over makeup without ruining a thing.
Revision Intellishade SPF 45 TruPhysical - A 5 in 1 product but can be applied as a top up when needed.
No excuses anymore sorry.
2. You Miss Key Spots
Pigmentation loves your hands, neck, chest and even your upper lip (we've all seen the moustache shadow). These areas are often forgotten and are usually the first to show signs of uneven tone. Make it a ritual every day. SPF from forehead to fingertips (and right down to your nipples).
Nimue’s SPF 40 or SPF 50 Environmental Shield are my go-to daily recommendations. Both give you broad-spectrum protection and contain antioxidant complexes to help stop further pigmentation from forming.

3. You’re Getting Hit With HEV, Infrared, and Pollution
UV isn’t the only trigger. Blue light from screens (HEV), infrared from heat, and environmental aggressors like smog can all lead to stubborn pigment. This is where next-gen sunscreens really matter.
Nimue SPF 50 Environmental Shield goes above and beyond UV and shields you from HEV (blue light from screens), infrared and pollution too. It’s lightweight, non-oily and ideal if you’re serious about protecting your results.
4. You’re Not Treating the Pigment at the Source
SPF protects your skin but it doesn’t treat the pigmentation that’s already there. You need targeted ingredients to lift it and block the enzymes that trigger melanin production.
My favourite products that are great in fighting pigmentation are...
SkinBetter Science EvenTone – A clinically backed brightening serum that’s non-irritating and safe for even sensitive skin.
Senté Cysteamine and HSA Pigment & Tone Corrector – Brilliant for stubborn pigmentation with added skin barrier support.
Nimue Fader Serum and Day/Night Fader Range – Excellent for consistent daily use alongside Nimue SPF.
Consistency is key. Pigmentation is notoriously slow to shift, especially if it’s hormonal or been there for years. But these products work well, you’ve just got to give them time and patience.
5. You’ve Got Hormonal or Internal Triggers
Pigmentation isn’t always about the sun. Hormones (especially oestrogen shifts during pregnancy, the pill or menopause), inflammation, heat, medications, or even your gut can play a role.
This is where Skinade or Skinade Targeted Solutions Derma Defence come in by feeding your skin from the inside to improve resilience, hydration, and tone.
If you’re wearing SPF but still seeing pigment, it doesn’t mean the SPF isn’t working, it means that your pigmentation is complex. It requires protection and correction. Daily sunscreen is your non-negotiable, but so is using the right brightening actives, protecting against more than just UV, and treating your body like a whole system (because it is).
