I have to say I love peels. In clinic surface peels, at home peels and skin peel pads. They have to be the right ones though!
Chemical peels have become increasingly popular as a means to achieve smoother, more radiant skin. However, as a skincare enthusiast and specialist, I have developed a personal perspective on the use of chemical peels. In this post, I will delve into the world of chemical peels to determine whether they are truly the key to flawless skin or if they pose potential risks. While I personally favor gentle, surface-level peels for their effectiveness, I am cautious about the use of medium depth or deep peels due to the risks they carry. Below are some points to note when having chemical peels.
1. Understanding Chemical Peels:
Chemical peels involve the application of a chemical solution to the skin, which helps exfoliate and improve its appearance. They can vary in depth, from superficial to medium depth and deep peels, each targeting different skin concerns. It is important to understand the differences between these levels of peels and their potential risks.
2. The Power of Gentle, Surface-Level Peels:
Gentle, surface-level peels can offer impressive results when used appropriately. They work by removing dead skin cells, unclogging pores, and stimulating collagen production. This can then allow the skin to become more permeable so products can penetrate better as well. These peels are generally well-tolerated and can improve skin texture, tone, and overall radiance. As a regular practitioner of these peels, I have witnessed firsthand the positive impact of these peels on my clients' skin.
3. The Risk of Post-Inflammatory Pigmentation and Sensitivity:
Medium depth or deep peels, while touted for their transformative effects, come with potential risks. These peels can cause post-inflammatory pigmentation, sensitivity, and prolonged downtime. It is crucial to approach these peels with caution and only consider them as a last resort after thorough research and consultation with a qualified professional. These types of peels should also come with a 'lifestyle' routine as well. Absolutely no sun whatsoever afterwards and your SPF must be slathered on, no questions asked.
4. Thorough Research and Consultation:
Before undergoing any chemical peel, it is essential to conduct thorough research. Educate yourself about the different types of peels, their potential risks, and the qualifications and experience of the practitioner performing the procedure. Seek a consultation with a trusted skincare professional who can assess your skin's condition and recommend the most suitable peel for your specific needs and goals.
5. The Importance of Individualised Approach:
Every individual's skin is unique, and what works for one person may not work for another. It is crucial to consider your skin type, concerns, and sensitivities when deciding whether a chemical peel is right for you. An individualised approach, tailored to your specific needs, can minimise potential risks and maximise the benefits of the treatment.
6. The Aftercare is Imperative:
Don't think that once you've had your skin peel in the clinic that that's it. Even just with gentle, surface level peels you must be on top of your SPF and skincare routines. With surface level peels (like I perform in my clinic), you must avoid the sun for around 3 weeks post treatment and be wearing your SPF every single day afterwards - plus re-apply when you can too.
With medium and deep peels, the aftercare is far more detailed and I suggest that you speak with your medical practitioner to get the correct aftercare advice and follow it to the letter.
There can be risks involved with any peels and so always ensure you have spoken to your therapist beforehand and you are confident that they know what they are doing and in the knowledge that they have.
Chemical peels can be a valuable tool in achieving smoother, more radiant skin when approached with caution and proper understanding. While I personally prefer gentle, surface-level peels for their effectiveness, I urge you to exercise caution when considering medium depth or deep peels due to the potential risks involved. Thorough research, consultation with a qualified professional, and an individualised approach are essential in determining the suitability and safety of chemical peels. Ultimately, the choice of undergoing a chemical peel should be an informed decision made with your skin's health and well-being in mind. Definitely speak with your therapist first and do not, under any circumstances, buy peels online that are not designed for home use.
